Google Announces New Image Search

The exclusivity of Google’s Search Event hinted that there was something big on it’s horizon. By invitation only, Overdrive was able to get looped-in on the latest news being announced during this event. One of the biggest announcements is the ability to search in Google with just an image.

Google Images has been around for a while now, but it seems Google is looking to upgrade its search features with images altogether. Just recently announced by Google reps at the Search Event, users can put an image into the search box and see results based on that image. Users will have the ability to search with images in four ways:

  1. Copy and paste the Image URL
  2. Upload an image directly from their computer’s desktop
  3. Drag-and-drop an image into the search box
  4. Use the available Chrome or Firefox extensions

How will image search results appear? Google reps gave a few examples of how searching with images will be used. For one, users can search a company’s logo and see search results for that company’s website. Additionally, if a user finds an image they are interested in finding more information about, searching that image will give the user results on the location of the image and more.

Until more users have this new Google feature available to them, we are unsure how it will be received. However, with the launch of new image search functionality, it once again makes for an overall better user experience and makes searching even easier.
